JOB SUMMARY:

The Nursing Informatics Specialist (“NIS”) (NP) is an advanced clinical informatics practitioner responsible for designing, configuring, optimizing, and supporting clinical workflows and medication-related functionality within electronic health record (EHR) systems, including SmartCare, Epic, and related public-sector health IT platforms. This role requires licensure as a Nurse Practitioner and deep experience in behavioral health, medication management, and e-prescribing workflows.

The NIS serves as a bridge between clinical practice, prescriber workflows, and health information technology by evaluating care processes, translating clinical needs into system design requirements, and ensuring EHR configurations support safe, effective, and compliant care. Particular emphasis is placed on e-prescribing (eRx), medication reconciliation, controlled substance workflows, order sets, nursing documentation, clinical decision support, and regulatory compliance for behavioral health and government-sector programs.

This role collaborates with end users, other nursing & prescribing SMEs, trainers, vendors, and IT teams to support high-quality care delivery through optimized informatics and evidence-based system design.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY  include but are not limited to:

• Participate in the analysis, testing, validation, documentation, and deployment of new builds, enhancements and updates to EHR applications functionality.
• Conduct workflow assessments to identify areas for improvement.
• Configure and optimize e-prescribing workflows, including medication lookup, medication reconciliation, controlled substance protocols, and prior authorization workflows.
• Conduct clinical scenario-based testing with a focus on nursing and prescribing workflows and safety to ensure that configurations align with operational needs, regulatory requirements, and clinical best practices.
• Translate clinical practice standards, prescribing protocols, and medication-related documentation requirements into EHR functional specifications and build requirements.
• Validate build readiness from a clinical and prescriber workflow lens before promotion to production.
• Develop and maintain documentation, including workflow diagrams, build guides, test scripts, data mapping, and change logs.
• Assist in developing and maintaining training materials for clinical and non-clinical users; collaborate with trainers to ensure alignment between build and training environments.
• Participate in governance activities related to formularies, medication lists, and clinical content.
• Ensure workflows comply with federal/state prescribing regulations, including behavioral health and public-sector requirements.
• Provide clinical input into training content and design specifically for other healthcare professionals.
• Support data extraction, reporting needs, and preparation of dashboards or analytics elements that rely on application configuration and data availability.
• Adhere to change control processes and ensure smooth transitions across development, test, and production environments.
• Maintain ongoing communication with leaders regarding system updates, issues, and enhancement opportunities.
• Demonstrate compliance with privacy, confidentiality, and security requirements in handling protected health information (PHI).
• Perform other duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to organizational success.
• BACKGROUND CHECK ELIGIBLE DUTIES
  This position will have access to various applications that house confidential information, including county records, employee demographic and private behavioral health information; ensure that access is used responsibly, maintaining the integrity and security of systems while preventing accidental or malicious misuse.

QUALIFICATIONS –
An acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and skill will be considered.

EDUCATION

• Active Nurse Practitioner (NP) license in the United States (any state).
• Master’s degree preferred (Nursing, Healthcare Informatics, Health Information Technology, or related field).

EXPERIENCE

• Five (5) years of NP experience in behavioral health settings.
• Three (3) years of direct experience supporting EHR systems, clinical informatics, workflow analysis, or related health IT functions, including:
• Experience performing system build, configuration, or application analysis within an EHR environment.
• Experience in public health, acute care, or community-based care preferred.
• Experience working with other clinicians and operational teams to improve workflow and system usability.

• Ability to analyze and document nursing/prescribing workflows with attention to regulatory requirements and operational needs.
• Clinical understanding of controlled substances workflows, refill processes, drug interactions, and prescribing regulations.
• Proficiency in understanding data structures in EHR systems and mapping them to workflows, reports, and clinical documentation.
• Ability to configure medications, templates, safety alerts and security roles in EHR.
• Ability to conduct clinical/technical troubleshooting and develop resolutions collaboratively with users and vendors.
• Familiarity with SQL, reporting tools, and data structures preferred.
• Ability to identify sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with tact and discretion.

COMPUTER SKILLS – Knowledge of EHR applications, clinical documentation tools, and healthcare IT systems. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with SQL, reporting tools, or data visualization tools is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS and MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Demonstrate the ability to read, comprehend, and respond appropriately through written or verbal form; demonstrate tactfulness when communicating including internal communication with staff members of all levels; ability to communicate with a variety of audiences effectively.
